Gospel Ground War

Ken Currie (Downtown Campus) | 1 Thessalonians 2:1-12

Introduction and Background

At the Downtown Campus we are investigating what the Bible has to say about what it means to be a healthy church and using 1 Thessalonians as a reference.

Motive (vv. 1–6)

We see Paul’s motive for ministry and method.

1) Declare the Gospel of God
2) General Exclusions (v. 3)

For our appeal does not spring from error or impurity or any attempt to deceive

a) Not from error b) Not impure motives c) Not a trick

3) Pure motive (v. 4)

But just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts.

4) Specific Exclusions (vv. 5–6)

For we never came with words of flattery, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness. Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ.

a) Not flattery b) Not greed c) Not glory from others

Method (vv. 7–12)

So what did it look like? Paul, Silas and Timothy do during those three weeks when they weren’t reasoning in the synagogue? What did they do with the Jews, the devout Greeks and the leading women who believed?

Like a Mother

But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children.—1 Thessalonians 2:7

(gentle, listening, empathetic)

Like a Father

For you know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.—1 Thessalonians 2:11–12

(exhorting, encouraging)

Giving Their Very Selves

So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.—1 Thessalonians 2:8

Note: In order to disciple to the fullest (give our very selves) we must minister with what are generally feminine strengths and generally masculine strengths.

Giving the Gospel to each other and "our very lives":
(Home, Gym, Hospital)

Small Group Ministry (Home)
Sunday school, classes, seminars (Gym)
Counseling ministry, deacons (Hospital)

Means (Gospel)
Text mentions the gospel four times explicitly: vv. 2, 4, 8, 9.
