Ministry Trip: Joni and Friends Family Retreat (August 2018)

Brad Nelson

Pastor for Global Outreach

During the year God has provided Bethlehem with many opportunities to do ministry both near home and around the world. If you are looking for a significant ministry that you can do as a family that is close to home, Bethlehem member Mary Horning is leading a team to work with Joni and Friends. Read on for more information from Mary as to what this ministry will entail and how you can make a difference for a family with a member who has a disability.

Our family attended the very first Joni and Friends Family Retreat 27 years ago, and our perspective on disability changed drastically. The day-to-day reality of caring for our 4-year-old daughter with physical and mental challenges was overwhelming. We were isolated and in need of practical, emotional, and spiritual support. We left that camp with fresh hope, rejuvenation, friendships with others who cope with similar struggles, and a stronger faith in Jesus.

At the Joni and Friends Retreat, short-term ministers serve as one-to-one friends to campers with disabilities, simply to love and encourage. As a member of this team, you’ll work alongside others from around the region. No previous experience is required—just a willing heart to see life through the eyes of the campers. Team members arrive one day before the families and receive training on disability and behavioral support.

The retreat will be held at Castaway Club Young Life Camp in Detroit Lakes, MN. The dates are August 14–19, and the cost is $450 (with financial help available for Bethlehem members). Trip leaders are Mary and Krista Horning.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Mary Horning (952-297-4167). See trip details and application (MM Joni & Friends 8/18).
