‘A Matter of Life or Death’ Seminar

Mike Tong

Pastor for Neighborhood Outreach, Downtown Campus

The leader of our Sanctity of Life Ministry, Delsie Baxter, invites us to attend the seminar, “A Matter of Life or Death: Understanding Physician-Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia” with Christopher Hook, MD. This important seminar will be held at the North Campus (in the Chapel) this Saturday, October 7. Delsie can tell you more ...

We are experiencing a growing cultural acceptance of legalized physician-assisted suicide (PAS) and euthanasia both in our country and globally. Do you remember when the name of Dr. Jack Kevorkian made most people cringe? Now six states and Washington D.C. have legalized PAS while a minimum of six additional states (including Minnesota) have active bills to do the same.

The arguments for PAS sound compassionate and compelling, using such words as “death with dignity” and “compassionate choices.” In fact, one of the leading pro-PAS organizations is named Compassion & Choices(!).

I have been involved in pro-life issues for more than 30 years, and I can attest that the discussion around these topics is much more difficult than talking about abortion—an act that takes the life of the innocent and well versus the sick and dying. Even though many of the arguments by those advocating PAS legislation sound very similar to pro-abortion rationale, addressing this issue is more of a challenge. We need to be sensitive that many who are calling for such legislation are doing so with hearts that are seeking relief for their loved ones—and they will share their story without pause.

But what does God say? How can we be true to what God has revealed about the sanctity of life and his authority on the issue while still showing hearts of compassion to our relatives, friends, and neighbors?

Are you ready to enter the discussion? It’s going to happen!

Come be prepared and equipped. Join us this coming Saturday, October 7, at the North Campus in the Chapel to gain a fuller understanding of this issue from both a medical and biblical perspective. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Christopher Hook, a Mayo Clinic physician and committed Christian who feels a great burden on this topic and has spoken about it on numerous occasions.

The seminar is free and does not require prior registration. Check-in and light refreshments start at 9am. The seminar runs 9:30–Noon, including time for Q&A.

Hope to see you there!
