Role Description

In dependence on God, the aim of the Coordinator for Kitchen Ministries, Downtown is to wholeheartedly glorify Jesus Christ, seeking to spread a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ by providing management, coordination, volunteer leadership and cooking for Wednesday Connections, funerals/memorial services and Bethlehem College and Seminary student lunches at our Downtown Campus. Coordinators shall maintain a Christian spirit of love and service toward the Bethlehem staff, congregation, and those we serve, in accordance with the church’s vision and philosophy of ministry.

Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities (10 hrs/wk): 

  1. Oversee the use and maintenance of the Downtown Campus kitchen facilities, including:
    1. Ensure that Minnesota Department of Health rules and regulations are appropriately followed.
    2. Keep the kitchen in good working order.
    3. Plan for and oversee the implementation of needed equipment or other improvements with the approval of the Director for Properties.
    4. Keep an accurate account of kitchen supplies and equipment.
    5. Ensure that adequate staples are on hand – coffee, condiments and paper products.
    6. Provide training in kitchen rules and the use of kitchen appliances for those using the facilities, both staff and volunteers.
    7. Be on the constant lookout for kitchen ministry volunteers and provide solid training and appreciation for them:
      1. Words of encouragement.
      2. Notes and occasional gifts, as the budget allows, and in coordination with the Director for Properties.
    8. Launder kitchen towels and linens.
  2. Provide two good quality, inexpensive meals on Wednesdays through the school year—a lunch for Bethlehem College and Seminary and a Wednesday Connection supper for the congregation: 
    1. Plan a nutritious menu two weeks in advance.
    2. Purchase food, ensuring that the cost of the meal does not exceed the amount students or congregation pays for the meal.
    3. Oversee food preparation, service, and cleanup.
    4. Supervise the volunteer staff in their assignments.
  3. Provide a good quality, inexpensive meal for funerals, church receptions, church events, other outside events:
    1. If the meal will come from an outside caterer, help the department to establish a per-plate/per-event scale charged to the group sponsoring the event.
    2. If the meal will be prepared in house:
      1. Purchase food, keeping to an established budget.
      2. Oversee food preparation, service, and cleanup.
    3. Supervise the volunteer staff in their assignments.
    4. Work with ministry departments to find the needed kitchen ministry volunteers. 
  4. Coordinate meals as requested for other Bethlehem College and Seminary seasonal events and conferences. This may include, but is not be limited to New Student Preview Days, the Godward Life Conference, Commencement.
  5. Oversee recruitment, development, coordination, and appreciation for volunteer kitchen workers (see above), which includes training of kitchen staff regarding dangers of possible hazards like:
    1. Potential contact with cleaning and sanitizing agents.
    2. Exposure to hot food, equipment and metal objects used in cooking and baking. 
    3. Exposure to sharp knives.

Additional Responsibilities As Ministry Areas Are Able to Afford Them: 

  1. In coordinate with the event organizers and the facilities department:
    1. Coordinate with custodians and other church staff for event needs.
    2. Be the first point of contact when ministry areas would like their events to serve a meal. Ensure the following:
      1. You or a trained volunteer oversee the meal planning and preparations.
      2. The cost of the meal (including your time) is covered by the amount the ministry area or the participants pay.
    3. Ensure that serving stations, and tables/chairs are set up as needed.
    4. Provide guidance to the ministry department on décor, keeping in compliance with the Fire Marshall.
    5. Ensure that items are appropriately cleaned before being put into storage.

Other Duties:

  1. The Coordinator will carry out such other duties as may be assigned by the church from time to time.

  1. Seek to sustain a vital, growing relationship with the Lord through personal and corporate worship, study of God’s Word, prayer, and regular, ongoing fellowship with believers at Bethlehem.
  2. Model servant leadership and exhibit a helpful, joyful attitude. 
  3. Be an individual of prayer and of the Word, sensitive to what the Spirit is saying to Bethlehem, devoted to daily prayer and Bible reading for the sake of being guarded from sin and stirring up one’s heart and mind to renewed passion for Christ. Gladly participate in mutual care and accountability with other believers.
  4. Seek to do duties in the power of the Holy Spirit, undergirded with prayer, guided by the Scriptures, and manifesting the character of Christ for the glory of God.

Church Member

  1. Be a member in good standing of Bethlehem Baptist Church or, if not a member when called to the church, become a member as soon as possible, ideally completing the membership process within three (3) months of the date that employment begins.
  2. While ensuring first loyalty is to God and the Word, support the leadership of the church generally and specifically for one’s area of ministry. Strive to maintain positive and fruitful relationships with other Bethlehem employees, members, and leaders. While concerns or differences of opinion may arise, all employees will communicate in a biblical manner and abide by appropriate supervisory direction and any final determinations of the Council of Elders. Whether leading ministry or submitting to those in authority, the Ministerial Coordinator will do so in a joyful manner.

  1. Have the vision and organizational skills necessary to work effectively, creatively, and flexibly within the context of a large church with multiple staff members and ministries. 
  2. Strictly maintain appropriate confidentiality according to the guidelines set forth in Bethlehem’s Employee Handbook and Relational Commitments.
  3. Sign our Employee Handbook Acknowledgement Form and comply with all applicable church policies.
  4. Give servant-hearted support to specific area(s) of ministry as well as to the broader needs of Bethlehem’s ministry.

  1. Demonstrate a commitment to personal growth by attending appropriate training, development, and team-building events.
  2. Have a good understanding of the people, projects, or ministry under the role responsibilities. Demonstrate faithfulness and good follow-through both in collaboration with other ministry partners and in independent efforts related to the role.

Ministry Qualifications

  1. Have the ability to manage the kitchen and oversee the food preparation and service for church events, large or small.
  2. Have the ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time, and to push or pull food trays and carts.
  3. Have the ability to lift, store, and retrieve food items and other supplies.
  4. Have a working knowledge of preparing, cooking and serving food.
  5. Have a working knowledge of kitchen utensils and equipment.
  6. Must follow hygienic practices as noted in the sanitation guidelines.
  7. Willing and able to complete ServSafe training and certification.
