Pastor for Worship & Education, South Campus

Position Details

  • Reports To: Pastor for Preaching & Vision, South

Role Description

Under the aid and authority of the Holy Spirit and in partnership with the Pastoral Team at the South Campus, the Pastor for Worship & Education, South serves the church by providing worship and educational leadership for the South Campus, enabling the staff, elders and congregation to together carry out our mission and DNA priorities, while embracing the theological teaching of the Elder Affirmation of Faith.


Worship (50%): 

  1. Provide pastoral leadership, direction, and oversight for public worship services and music ministries on the South Campus. This includes:
    1. The coordination, planning and leading of corporate Sunday morning services, Wednesday Connection gatherings, and other special occasions (Christmas, Easter, etc.), ensuring that the worship services are given direction, with sensitivity to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
    2. Work with other worship staff members (paid and volunteer) to oversee the development of campus-specific ensembles, choirs, worship teams, etc. and to communicate all-church music/worship opportunities to the South Campus flock.
  2. Oversee, through leadership or delegation, the creation, direction, training, and use of whatever choirs, ensembles, worship teams, or instrumental groups would help express our philosophy of worship.
  3. Oversee the selection, preparation, and development of all worship ministry participants (worship leaders, teams, vocalists, instrumentalists, etc.) who minister in the worship services. 
  4. Develop the worship leaders of the South Campus to lead the congregation well in the ethos of Bethlehem Worship Theology and Philosophy.
    1. Work with the worship teams to develop equipped and competent servants in musical support and worship leadership.
    2. Work to infuse the Bethlehem Worship Ethos into worship ministry participants.
  5. Develop the next generation of worship leaders, vocalists, and musicians through theological and musical education (e.g. choirs - adult/children's/youth, worship theology seminars/classes, etc.).

Educational Development (30%):

  1. Oversee the South Campus Adult Sunday School tracks/classes:
  1. Work with the South Campus Elders to cast vision for the Adult Sunday school classes.
  2. Under the leadership of the Pastor for Preaching & Vision, South, work with the South Campus pastoral staff to select curriculum, training materials, and resources for Sunday school classes.
  3. Coordinate teachers for each Sunday school class, ensuring each class has leaders and elder presence.
  4. Regularly participate in the joyful teaching of classes.
  1. Oversee the design and implementation of other South Campus education opportunities:
  1. Provide seminars and events that will help South Campus members understand and implement Godly characteristics as related to culture and practical living. 
  2. Provide other strategic educational opportunities at a level more robust and comprehensive than a typical Sunday school class (i.e. in the mold of TBI style classes).

Oversee the South Campus Deacon Team (10%):

  1. Provide oversight to the South deacon team by casting vision and offering pastoral guidance.
  2. Serve as the elder contact for the deacons by facilitating communication and vision between the elders and deacons.
  3. Coordinate deacon teams for various areas of ministry to best serve the South Campus. 

Pastoral Care Duties (10%):

  1. Give pastoral care to South members through counseling, prayer, teaching, and participation in body life.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  1. Shared Reports:
    1. Provide direction and feedback to shared Administrative Assistant.
  2. Supervisor Responsibilities:
    1. Participates in interviewing, hiring, and training employees.
    2. Participates in job description creation.
    3. Ensures ministry responsibilities are fulfilled.
    4. Approves short-term ministry objectives.
    5. Conducts annual performance evaluations and provides regular performance feedback.
    6. Facilitates conflict resolution.
    7. Approves paid time-off requests.
    8. Ensures appropriate balance between the various ministries. 

Other Duties:

  1. The Pastor will carry out such other duties as may be assigned by the Pastor for Preaching & Vision, South.

General Overall Church Aims:

Note: The following three items are listed on all pastoral job descriptions. They unify the pastoral staff around care for our congregation, common church-wide priorities outside the pastor’s area of ministry, and our commitment to Bethlehem College & Seminary. 

  1. Congregational Care: Pastors will maintain a clear focus on congregational care, dedicating a significant portion of his ministry towards crisis care, counseling, weddings, funerals, relationship building, etc.
  2. Overall priority goals: In addition to each campus and ministry area’s own aims, our pastoral leadership may set regular church-wide, short-term priority goals intended to focus attention on common objectives, unifying the staff in our common mission. Each pastor will lead his ministry team to fulfill these goals.
  3. Bethlehem College & Seminary: Each pastor will be assigned one or more seminarians to mentor.


Godly Character

  1. Meet the spiritual, personal, and character qualifications of an elder found in 1 Timothy 3:1–7 and Titus 1:6–9 and exhibit the fruit of the Spirit as found in Galatians 5:22-23.
  2. Model servant leadership and exhibit a helpful, joyful attitude. 
  3. Be a man of prayer and a man of the Word, sensitive to what the Spirit is saying to Bethlehem, devoting himself to daily prayer and Bible reading for the sake of guarding himself from sin and stirring up his heart and mind to renewed passion for Christ; he will lead his family in regular times in the Word and prayer; and he will gladly participate in mutual care and accountability with other believers.
  4. Seek to undertake his duties in the power of the Holy Spirit, undergirded with prayer, guided by the Scriptures, and manifesting the character of Christ for the glory of God.

Church Member

  1. Be a member in good standing of Bethlehem Baptist Church or, if not a member when called to the church, become a member as soon as possible, ideally completing the membership process within three (3) months of the date that employment begins.
  2. While ensuring first loyalty is to God and the Word, support the leadership of the church generally and specifically for his area of ministry. Strive to maintain positive and fruitful relationships with other Bethlehem employees, members, and leaders. While concerns or differences of opinion may arise, all employees will communicate in a biblical manner and abide by appropriate supervisory direction and any final determinations of the Council of Elders. Whether leading the congregation or submitting to those in authority, he will do so in a joyful manner. While visionary, he will have his ear to the ground and be a good listener.
  3. Understand, endorse, and teach, without reservation, the church’s biblical and theological teaching as expressed in Bethlehem’s Elder Affirmation of Faith. He must embody Bethlehem DNA.
  4. Joyfully minister in accord with Bethlehem’s Pastor’s Covenant, in a manner that honors Christ and is a positive example to others.  
  5. As outlined in Bethlehem’s Elder Affirmation of Faith, pastors must be male.

Organizational Skill and Awareness

  1. Have the vision and organizational skills necessary to work effectively, creatively, and flexibly within the context of a large church with multiple staff members and ministries. 
  2. Strictly maintain appropriate confidentiality according to the guidelines set forth in Bethlehem’s Employee Handbook and Relational Commitments.
  3. Sign our Employee Handbook Acknowledgement Form and comply with all applicable church policies.
  4. Give servant-hearted support to specific area(s) of ministry as well as to the broader needs of Bethlehem’s ministry.

Self-Motivated and Dependable

  1. Demonstrate a commitment to personal growth by attending appropriate training, development, and team-building events.
  2. Have a good understanding of the people, projects, or ministry under his responsibility and demonstrate faithfulness and good follow-through both in collaboration with other ministry partners and in independent efforts related to his role.

Skilled Pastoral & Music Leadership

  1. Compelling, gifted public communicator with a blend of humility and zeal.
  2. Formal musical training and significant pastoral experience in the field of worship leadership.
  3. Agree with and be excited by Bethlehem’s philosophy of worship.
  4. Be a man whose authentic, contagious worship leadership flows out of his personal worshipping/devotional life.
  5. Demonstrate openness and sensitivity to God’s leading during worship.
  6. Have a significant breadth of musical talent and experience.
  7. Theologically sound enough to discern appropriate lyrics and music styles that support the Biblical messages
  8. Possess pastoral experience and proven teaching effectiveness.

Personal Skills

  1. Servant Leadership—the Pastor should be able to lead in a variety of contexts (individual, small groups, large groups) in such a way that Jesus Christ and his gospel are central. He should be a self-starter and take initiative. He should be wise and discerning and know when to be decisive, sensitive, tender, and firm. 
  2. Relational—the Pastor should have a heart to care for people. That drive should manifest itself in the appropriate use of time. 
  3. Administrative—while seeking mainly to shepherd people, the Pastor should have the skill set and ability to effectively manage the various administrative tasks associated with the position.
  4. Teaching/Equipping—the Pastor should be a fruitful, biblical teacher and champion of Bethlehem’s mission and vision. His teaching should effectively “equip the saints for the work of the ministry.”
  5. Communication—the Pastor should be able to communicate clearly, concisely, and in a loving and biblical manner. 
  6. Peacemaking—the Pastor should be able to tactfully and winsomely unite people with varying perspectives to advance harmony and love, and to achieve common goals. 
  7. Preaching—the Pastor should be an effective preacher who is able to rightly handle the word of God and joyfully engage in expository exultation personally.
